Tea and stomach sensitivity

thé bio

Some people may be sensitive to tea due to various reasons, others not. Here are a few possible reasons why you may experience stomach sensitivity after drinking tea in the morning on empty stomach:

Caffeine content: Tea contains caffeine, which can stimulate the production of stomach acid,  and that can lead to heartburn or other digestive issues. People who are particularly sensitive to caffeine may experience these symptoms even with small amounts of tea.

Tannins: Tea also contains tannins, which are a type of plant compound that can cause stomach irritation and contribute to digestive discomfort, particularly if consumed in large amounts or on an empty stomach.

Pre-existing digestive issues: People with pre-existing digestive issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or acid reflux, may be more prone to experiencing stomach sensitivity after drinking tea.

What you can do about it?
Avoid drinking tea on empty stomach. It’s better to consume food (breakfast, lunch) with it to avoid stomach irritation. Another option is to replace tea with tisane if drinking tea is part of your morning routine or if you are following intermittent fasting.
